Canvas shoes, also known as “alpargatas” in South America or “esparteñas” in Spain, are a traditional working-class shoe made from a natural fiber knit or nylon, with a natural or plastic sole. The industrialized, mass-produced canvas shoe, with no tying, started to be worn by Argentine workers in the forties and fifties and was associated with President Perón.
