Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot was created in the early 1940s when Frida Kahlo was trying to accelerate her production to make a living from painting. Here, Kahlo wears typical attire worn by women from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and her hairstyle of braids intertwined with green wool cords is common among indigenous women from central and southern Mexico. Both elements are part of her much more theatrical and sometimes extravagant style of dress, which was both political, as it advocated for a nationalist identity based on indigenous culture, and personal because it erased her father's German-Hungarian heritage in favor of her mother's Oaxacan roots. This painting belongs to the mature stage of her artistic production, where Frida confronts us with a more serene gaze but without losing her firmness. The exuberance of the leaves and spikes in the background, along with the presence of the domestic animals accompanying her, collectively allude to a recurring theme in her work: fertility and motherhood.
