In this artwork, Kahlo wears typical attire worn by women from the Tehuantepec Isthmus, and her hairstyle with intertwined braids adorned with green wool cords is common among indigenous women from central and southern Mexico. Both elements contribute to her highly theatrical and sometimes extravagant style of dress, which was simultaneously political, as it advocated for a nationalist identity based on indigenous culture, and personal, as it emphasized her mother's Oaxacan roots over her father's German-Hungarian heritage.
