In 1954, young psychiatrist Germán Velázquez returns to Spain to work at the Ciempozuelos women's asylum, south of Madrid. After exile in 1939, he spent fifteen years in Switzerland, welcomed by Dr. Goldstein's family. In Ciempozuelos, Germán reunites with Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira, a paranoid parricide who fascinated him at thirteen, and meets nurse María Castejón, whom Aurora taught to read and write as a child. Drawn to María, Germán doesn't understand her rejection and suspects her life holds many secrets. The reader discovers her modest origins as the granddaughter of the asylum gardener, her years as a maid in Madrid, her tragic love story, alongside Germán's reasons for returning to Spain. Kindred spirits fleeing their pasts, Germán and María seek a chance at happiness, but they live in a humiliated country, where sins become crimes, and puritanism, official morality, conceals all kinds of abuses and injustices.
