In the stories of The Other Shore, written between 1937 and 1945, Julio Cortázar shows us the fantastic in the interstices of everyday reality. Ghosts, vampires, witches, and doubles emerge, as does the fly in Paula's soup in "Witch," to reveal that the author himself considers, from the beginning, that his work belongs to the fantastic genre in its broadest sense, ranging from the supernatural to the mysterious and from terror to the unusual. First published in 1995, this book presents an early Cortázar, his obsessions, and his ongoing dialogue with writers like Horacio Quiroga, Leopoldo Lugones, Jorge Luis Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares, Silvina Ocampo, and Felisberto Hernández. The Other Shore accompanies from its title the recognition of the Río de la Plata territory, which is already a canon of fantastic, gothic, and horror literature, now nourished by contemporary authors like Mariana Enriquez, Samanta Schweblin, or Luciano Lamberti. An unmissable and perhaps forgotten work of the beloved cronopio.
