Diego and Me (1949) by Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 1907–1954) set a record for Latin American art in November 2021 when Eduardo F. Costantini acquired it for his personal collection. This piece represents Frida's last bust self-portrait painted before her death in 1954, featuring the face of her husband Diego Rivera as a third eye. The artwork symbolizes the tumultuous relationship between Frida and Diego, married for almost 25 years in a passionate and turbulent union. Despite Kahlo's opposition to the Catholic religion, she incorporated elements of Christian iconography into her works, and spirituality permeated her life and art. The cyclical conception of time and the perpetual continuity between life and death in Mesoamerican cultures profoundly influenced her perspective. Additionally, her worldview was influenced by Egyptian culture, Hinduism, Buddhism, and occult doctrines, from which she drew the representation of the third eye (as seen in Diego and Me). Dualism frequently appears in her work, with the central binary being herself and Diego, associated with universal dialectics such as masculine and feminine, life and death, sun and moon, body and mind.
