Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot was created in the early 1940s, during a period when Frida Kahlo was striving to accelerate her painting production to sustain herself financially. In this artwork, Kahlo wears typical attire worn by women from the Tehuantepec Isthmus, and her hairstyle with intertwined braids adorned with green wool cords is common among indigenous women from central and southern Mexico. Both elements contribute to her highly theatrical and sometimes extravagant style of dress, which was simultaneously political, as it advocated for a nationalist identity based on indigenous culture, and personal, as it emphasized her mother's Oaxacan roots over her father's German-Hungarian heritage. This painting belongs to Kahlo's mature artistic period, where she confronts us with a more serene yet resolute gaze. The exuberance of the foliage and grains in the background, coupled with the presence of the domestic animals accompanying her, collectively allude to a recurring theme in her work: fertility and motherhood.
