Diego and Me (1949)" by Frida Kahlo (Coyoacán, 1907–1954) set a record for Latin American art in November 2021 when Eduardo F. Costantini acquired it for his personal collection. It's Kahlo's last bust self-portrait before her death in 1954, depicting her husband Diego Rivera's face as a third eye. The painting symbolizes their tumultuous relationship, spanning almost 25 years in a passionate yet turbulent marriage. Despite Kahlo's opposition to Catholicism, she incorporated elements of Christian iconography into her work, drawing on spirituality that permeated her life and art. Influenced by Mesoamerican cultures, Egyptian culture, Hinduism, Buddhism, and occult teachings, Kahlo's worldview includes the representation of the third eye, central to "Diego and Me." Dualism is a recurring theme in her work, particularly the dichotomy between herself and Diego, embodying universal dialectics like male and female, life and death, sun and moon, body and mind.
