The large notebook features smooth pages reproducing the artwork "Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot (1942)" by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, currently part of the "Latin America to the South of the South" exhibition in Malba's permanent collection.

"Self-Portrait with Monkey and Parrot" was created in the early 1940s when Frida Kahlo was trying to accelerate her production to make a living from painting. Here, Kahlo wears typical clothing worn by women from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and her hairstyle with braids intertwined with green wool cords is common among indigenous women in central and southern Mexico. Both elements are part of her much more theatrical and sometimes even extravagant style of dress, which was both political, as it claimed a nationalist identity based on indigenous culture, and personal because it erased her father's German-Hungarian heritage in favor of her mother's Oaxacan roots. This painting belongs to the mature stage of her artistic production, in which Frida confronts us with a calmer gaze but without losing her firmness. The exuberance of the leaves and spikes in the background, along with the presence of the domestic animals that accompany her, allude together to a recurring theme in her work: fertility and maternity.
